In the past year partly new structures have been created in order to be able to react better to order fluctuations at the customers', so a logistics unit has been established which has taken on this function for the whole of Europe. This is where among other things the whole of the medium- and long-term planning for this area comes together. "Against this background we started the "Materials Handling resources - Europe" project", declares Simon Dreher, Manager of Logistics Consulting at Mahle GmbH. "Along with pure project management, the logistics consulting team takes on technical and strategic project tasks, from analysis of the current state of affairs through creating the concept, right up to implementation and after-care within the Mahle organisation and, if required, for external customers also." The project incorporated 11 European sites of piston systems product line Europe, in Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The first task in all plants was to conduct a stock take of the materials handling vehicles. This showed that there were in existence around 300 trucks from different manufacturers, of different ages and in greatly differing states of service. "The stock in Germany, for example, had reached an average age of 20 years, which had led to excessive expenditure on repairs and maintenance. Due to the lack of homogeneity in the fleet, the costs were no longer calculable. In addition we found that the industrial trucks were very differently utilised", says Dreher.
The advantage of Still in technology, service and costs.
A fleet tendering exercise was undertaken, which included all well-known manufacturers. The objective of this was an outline contract which was to include all trucks, as a package solution for eleven plants. What was required was not only a made-to-measure mix of trucks but also comprehensive service. Mahle had already decided in advance on a leasing model for the financing. "In a total of two rounds the decision fell in favour of the Still Company (Hamburg), whose quotation best met our requirements with regard to technology, service and costs", Dreher stated. "When evaluating all relevant points, Still was clearly ahead of its competitors." Together with the Still project leader, Armin Seybold, the Mahle project manager visited each plant involved in order to determine the effective requirements and to develop a technical standard for all sites. |
